Meet our speakers

MAX BUCKLAND

Max Buckland is co-founder of Three Birch Gardens offering garden design, installation and maintenance services that cultivates beauty, sanctuary, and joy in the Hudson Valley. Max is a graduate of The School of Professional Horticulture at The New York Botanical Garden. Max was born and raised in the Hudson River Valley. After living abroad, he returned home to where the grass truly is greener. He believes the outdoors to be the best classroom, and the plants he works with the best teachers. Max has a keen eye for balance and proportion, bringing out the best self of any shrub, tree, or garden. He gives back to the land he loves so much by designing gardens that pay homage to the Hudson River Valley.

REBECCA CITADINIR

Rebecca Citadini is a horticulturist and founder of Ecological Restorations LLC. As a passionate advocate for biodiversity restoration, her expertise is providing ecological solutions for residential and public landscapes. Originally a Melbourne-trained artist with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, she spent 20 years creating museum exhibits across Australia, Canada, and the U.S. Rebeca holds a Diploma in Professional Horticulture from NYBG and has collaborated with leading botanical institutions such as NYBG, Queens Botanical Garden and Landcraft Environments, Ltd. As Director of Horticulture at Winged Foot Golf Club (2021–2025), she restored woodlands and established display gardens. Merging sustainable horticultural practices with artistic design, Rebecca provides expert consulting and maintenance services, and serves on the Ward Acres Park Conservancy Board in New Rochelle, NY.

KIM EIERMAN

Kim Eierman (pronounced “Fireman”) is the Founder of EcoBeneficial LLC. She is an ecological landscape designer and environmental horticulturist specializing in native plants. Based in New York, Kim teaches at the New York Botanical Garden, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, The Native Plant Center and Massachusetts Horticultural Society. Kim is the author of the book, The Pollinator Victory Garden: Win the War on Pollinator Decline with Ecological Gardening.

MICHAEL FORMICHELLI

Michael Formichelli, GIS Representative & Horticultural Inspector 2 · NYS Department of Agriculture & Markets. His position responsibilities include the identification of invasive pests and the injury caused by these pests. Mike also produces spotted lanternfly training seminars for interested parties and performs regulatory inspections. He has been employed with the NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets since 2002 and received his B.A. in Biology from Oberlin College.

DON GABEL

Don Gabel has been involved in the green industry for over 50 years, having owned and operated a small consulting business in his early years to serving as the Director of Plant Health at the New York Botanical Garden for 18 years. He continues to teach insects and disease courses at NYBG, as he has been doing for the past 32 years. Currently he is a consultant in sustainable solutions to horticulture and arboriculture plant problems. Among his many credentials, he is an ISA Certified Arborist and a member of the N.Y. State Nursery and Landscape Association. Don still enjoys skiing, hiking, 4 grandchildren and an occasional really hard plant health diagnosis.

BRAM GUNTHER

Bram Gunther is VP of Science and Strategy for Plan It Wild, working to rewild America, one yard at a time. Bram is Co-founder and Senior Advisor to the Natural Areas Conservancy. Formerly, Chief of Forestry, Horticulture, and Natural Resources for NYC Parks and Co-Director of the New York City Urban Field Station, a joint research facility of NYC Parks, the Natural Areas Conservancy, and the U.S. Forest Service. Bram joined the NYC Parks agency in 1991 as an Urban Park Ranger and he eventually served as the program’s Citywide Director. Bram has a B.A. in American Literature from SUNY Purchase and a M.S. in Environmental Management from the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. Bram sits on the Board of Directors for the Friends of Hilltop Hanover Farm & Environmental Center in Yorktown, NY.

TREVOR HALL

Trevor Hall is Local Manager in the Bartlett Tree Experts Elmsford, NY Office. Trevor has a B.S. in Ornamental Horticulture/Urban Forestry from the University of Maryland. He has worked in the field of Arboriculture since 1989 and began his career with Bartlett Tree Experts in 1992 where he held several positions in Baltimore and Annapolis operations prior to transferring to the Elmsford, NY office in 1999 as a Foreman/IPM Technician. He continued in that role until becoming an Arborist Representative and Local Manager in 2005. As a Board Certified Master Arborist with the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA), Trevor helps property owners maintain the health and beauty of their landscapes with knowledgeable advice about tree and shrub care. Trevor is active in the tree care industry. He is a judge in the annual NYS Tree Climbing Competition (and he was the 2004 winner of the event). He has been the State Arborist Representative for the NYS Arbor Day Celebration and Poster Contest. Trevor is past President of the NY Arborist Association and teaches courses on Tree Care Practices at the New York Botanical Garden.

THOMAS LEWIS

Thomas Lewis is Founder and Principal of Trillium: Invasive Species Management, Inc. Armed with a B.S. in Biology from James Madison University, Thomas started out his career practicing habitat restoration and working as a forestry technician for the National Park Service. He took time out of that path to earn a Master’s in Environmental Policy from the Bard Center for Environmental Policy. After volunteering to remove invasives in parks and noticing invasive weeds everywhere he went. Thomas’ passion led him to working on and for the natural environment, creating Trillium Invasive Species Management, inc. Thomas is a NYS DEC Licensed Pesticide Applicator in Categories; 2 (Forests), 3a (Ornamental and Turf), 5a (Aquatic Vegetation) and 6a (Right-of-way Vegetation Management). He is also on the board of The John Burroughs Association and formally an elected member of the Lower Hudson PRISM Steering Committee.

DAVID M. LOWREY

David M. Lowrey is President of North Castle Landscaping & Tree Service, Inc. David is a New York State and Connecticut Certified Arborist and NYS DEC and CT Certified Pesticide Applicator. He has been in the landscaping and tree service business since 1972 maintaining properties throughout Westchester and Fairfield counties. David is a lifelong resident of North Castle, NY. He graduated from Byram Hills High School and holds a degree in Ornamental Horticulture from SUNY Farmingdale. David previously served as President of the Westchester County Tree Protective Association. He currently services on the Board of the NYSTLA as the arborist liaison and is a member of the NYS Arborists Association and the CT Tree Protective Association.

NELSON MUNOZ

Nelson Munoz is owner of Cultural Lawns, LLC, a company founded in 2017 from a desire to change how people think about landscaping—starting with how it sounds, smells, and impacts the plant. Nelson has over 20 years of experience as a landscaper working for his family business. At Cultural Lawns, LLC his fleet of battery powered equipment reduces noise, pollution, and CO2 while electric autonomous mowers save time and allow his crew to offer a diversity of horticultural services.

JESSICA SCHULER

Jessica A. Schuler is the Program Coordinator of Natural Resources for the Westchester County Department of Parks, Recreation, and Conservation, where she serves as Director of Lasdon Public Gardens and contributes to the conservation team managing 18,000 acres of county parkland. A horticulturist and ecological restoration practitioner, she is dedicated to conserving biodiversity and advancing sustainable land management. Before joining Westchester County, Jessica was Director of the Thain Family Forest at The New York Botanical Garden. She holds a B.S. in Plant Science with Distinction in Research from Cornell University and is both an ISA Certified Arborist and a Certified Ecological Restoration Practitioner. She currently serves as a LHPRISM Steering Committee Member, a board of the Society for Ecological Restoration, Mid-Atlantic Chapter, and President of the New Rochelle Garden Club.

KATHLEEN STRAHAN

Kathleen Strahan is a Horticulture Educator at CCE Westchester. She graduated from Wellesley College with a degree in Environmental Science. While at Wellesley College, she worked and researched at the college’s historic botanic garden and arboretum. Kathleen has many years of landscape experience in public and private sectors across several states. She also spent 2 years working in highly specialized hydroponic and aeroponic farm facilities producing edible crops. At CCE Westchester, Kathleen is responsible for Diagnostic Lab services including plant, soil, and insect testing and identification.

DR. KYLE WICKINGS

Dr. Kyle Wickings is an Associate Professor of Entomology at Cornell University where he maintains a 60% research appointment in soil insect ecology and a 40% extension appointment in turf grass entomology. Research in the Wickings lab focuses on interactions between soil insects, microbes, and soil organic matter. The Wickings lab is also engaged in research to identify effective alternatives to neonicotinoids for the control of soil-dwelling pests in turf grass. Dr. Wickings received his B.S. from the University of Buffalo and his Ph.D. from the University of Georgia.
